More Criticisms of The Secret Movie

I wanted to offer a few more criticisms of The Secret movie and to also welcome all the new readers who have visited this blog. I realize that many of you probably saw Oprah’s show Thursday, which was all about The Law of Attraction and the movie The Secret. I’m excited to see that word is getting out about the extremely powerful set of metaphysical principles covered in the film.

Sure, this information has been repackaged in a “pop culture” way, so many viewers of The Secret will find the ideas silly or superficial. But it’s important to keep in mind that the concepts shared in The Secret are not REALLY so far “out there.” The concepts of applied faith, power prayer, and white magic have long been woven into all of the world’s most sacred spiritual traditions. Jesus was in essence a white magician – if you define white magician in the true sense of the word, as a person who unites with the loving powers of creation to generate change in the physical world. Jesus was very clear about how we all possess this ability and he said that one day we would perform “miracles” (really just the successful application of these principles) even greater than the miracles He performed. And I personally don’t think Jesus was a liar!

Unfortunately, when someone talks about the power of mind over matter or the law of attraction, grumpy people immediately come out of the woodwork to crankily state that “If the law of attraction is so damned easy, why aren’t I a millionaire?”

Hint: Take a look at that person’s rigid, unyielding, and negative attitude, and you’ll find some clues as to why he or she isn’t yet a millionaire!

One criticism I have about The Secret is that it was originally marketed heavily to many MLM (multi-level marketing) companies as an underground training and motivational video for their sales people. And its focus is more on money-making, which in turn inspires greed. So I can totally see how people might look at the whole phenomenon that The Secret has become and see it as yet another “Get Rich Quick” gimmick suckering people in.

But attracting abundance is just one way to apply these ancient principles. And ultimately, you can apply them to anything you want in your life, whether you’re seeking health, emotional well-being, spiritual illumination, new friendships, a romantic soul mate, or money.

The law of attraction is a spiritual law that is, on its own, a neutral principle. Like the law of gravity, it simply IS. And this law is active in all areas of our lives, areas which we tend to see as being separate. We don’t always see that the same energies are at play whether we are emotionally unwell, physically unwell, or financially unwell. Each of these conditions has to do with not being aware of the vibration we are carrying in our minds and our hearts. By lifting that vibration, each of these conditions can shift and we can create lasting, progressive change.

Every physical illness, for instance, is at its core a spiritual crisis. If you maintain the same state of consciousness that you had BEFORE your illness, you’ll never shift out of it. Every form of imbalance that we experience is a sign that somewhere, deep inside of us, we have gotten “out of whack.” It’s a sign that we need to readjust our thinking, our patterns of emotion, and our approach to life.

I don’t hope to convince the hard core “grumpapusses” who think The Secret is bunch of hooey and that the Law of Attraction crowd is a group of charlatans.

But for people who ARE looking at the sudden popularity of The Secret and wondering what it’s all about, I urge you to go deeper in studying the principles the movie talks about.

One good source for learning about the quantum physics and the science behind miracles is author and researcher Gregg Braden. His books like Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer and his new book, The Divine Matrix, pull together information from ancient religious traditions and modern science to show you that the power of applied faith is demonstrably real. This wisdom has been hidden away and people have misunderstood it for centuries, even though all of our greatest spiritual teachers have spoken about these ideas. Until now, the “masses” haven’t been exposed to these principles.

And if you ask me, it’s about time that this stuff is brought into the mainstream. This information is about the incredible creative powers that live within each us, that are operating in the background 24/7, and it’s important that we understand how they operate in order to create a better world.

Keep digging. If you found The Secret uplifting, merely interesting, or even completely annoying, know that the ideas presented in it speak to something deeper and VERY REAL that is going on all the time.

Don’t you want to understand it better?

Really enjoyed your thoughts on the Secret. Whilst I realise that everything I think creates my world (my belief) I feel that the original intention of the Secret has changed. Esther & Jerry Hicks are no longer a part of the project and I think they totally added to it. Ultimately Abraham Hicks really jump started Law of Attraction years ago and whilst people like Wayne Dyer picked it up and ran with it, they in my eyes are the ones who ultimately released it to the world in its present form. I feel a little strange about the Secret now, I feel the intention has changed from creating your life to making big bucks. Seeing the speakers on Oprah reminded me of kids trying to vie for attention from the teacher. I can't put a finger on it but I'm not so enthused with the end result now, when it first came out last year on Vividas it felt better, now seeing DVDs selling here for $50 I'm a little disappointed. You can subscribe to Abraham's tapes for a month and you only pay $10. Whilst I realise that I need to change my own financial beliefs (poverty consciousness) I always get a gut feeling for something feeling good and right and its not washing with The Secret. Its not the message that's the issue its the intention behind it. I know Rhonda said it was done with love but I think things have changed somewhere along the line. Cheers Lise

I know what you mean, anonymous, about how the distilled version of The Secret currently making the rounds (without Esther Hicks in it) doesn't have the same "zing" as the original. Also I agree that there is something a tad creepy and weird about how The Secret is now being promoted in more of a money-making context than a spiritual one. However, I think ultimately, it's really great that these ideas have more of a chance to reach the mainstream now. I thought What the Bleep was a great movie, too, but it never connected with that more Oprah/middle America crowd, and now The Secret is definitely out!

Thanks for your comments, and thank also to BJ for the suggestions about writing to the Oprah show board. I think if more people make their views known about how this type of quality spiritual/self-improvement show is appreciated, she'll do more of them. In fact, she did do a part two featuring The Secret this past Friday. I didn't get to see it, though!

the secret ruined my life and i was admitted to a psychiatric ward for 6 months, i really feel done in you persuasive evil sales men, and i bet theres some fat rich arsehole behind it all laughing about how hes fucked up loads of peoples lives, theres no scientific evidence for the power of imagination creating real facts, lets take it back to the concrete streets of what is fact, you cannot will a parking space to become available, this takes you to the road of 'magical thinking' where everything becomes a magical coincidence, and you end up thinking too much, thinking youre too powerful, and forgetting to feel, and then you go mad and confuse all your friends, trust me, i know other people who also were badly effected by the secret, what about having the will power to work hard for a long time to get money because you deserve it because youve come up with a good thing?? and possibly you hit on a bit of luck if you become famous or a millionaire, but dont start thinking thats because of the secret because its not. when i went crazy after reading the secret I realized that if you believed positive thinking about what you want to creates these positive things, then negative things can do the same, then i couldnt stop thinking about negative things creating dire consequences, i became obsessed, till i believed i could do aweful things, and believed these things would happen so much that i couldnt stop my mind from thinking bad things. surely you should grow in your own time, when youre ready to be a certain person do a certain thing then you do it quite naturally, theres no 'secret' to life, you should take your time, when i sing a song i sing because i mean it when it comes to me,when you start thinking about how you want your performance to go it ruins the magic of life and you loose your soul, you dont just will it to be a good performance, if youre not ready in your heart to give that song to people then its not because you havent harnessed the secret well enough, its because youre not there yet, learning to love involves giving in, and leaving space for the other person, the more of you thats there pushing some secret will the less youll feel real love and trust reality. if you want help achieving what you want read osho, you can trust him..he belives in becoming content with who you really are, rather than getting carried away with whatever desire youc choose(and im not trying to sell you a fucking book, im not devils little helper...do what works for you to find truth..but dont waste your life with 'the secret'.
